I was searching out what kind games are out in Japan that we're not getting here. I was into Zoids in the mid 80's when I was a kid, so this game immediately caught my eye and I thought, "I like fighting games, so why not?"For such an impulse buy, I'm pretty happy with it. I've always loved the over the top nature of a lot of Japanese shows and video games. And this game delivers that level of craziness. Fast music, flashing colors and an overly excited announcer shouting in broken English will have you in seizures in no time! There's nothing better than KO-ing your oppenent in a burst of light and particle effects while the announcer yells "GAI-mu Set-OH!"As far as this being a import, Japanese is the only language (except for a few lines of broken English from the announcer). So you'll have to learn to navigate Japanese menus, but it's pretty easy to figure out what's what. There's also some dialog before and after fights and those will stay forever a mystery to me. But something tells me it's probably mind numbing dumb anyway. I mean, it's a fighting game with robotic dinosaurs; I doubt it has Pulitzer prize winning writing.So as far as the fighting, it's pretty good. The animation is nice and smooth and there's a bunch of different moves that make use of all four face buttons and the shoulder buttons. It's a pretty simple button masher so don't expect anything too deep or to be learning crazy combos like King of Fighters or Blaz Blue. But it's a little more involved than the lobotomized Pokken Tournament. I'm still unlocking characters, so I honestly have no idea how many there are. The story mode has a rather lengthy branching path to work through. I've still got a long way to go, but for a fighting game, it definitely gives you a good single player campaign to keep you busy. So far, it has been very easy. Maybe it will get harder, but my understanding is that this game is aimed at younger kids, so I doubt it. That would be my one complaint, ever since I got a handle on the controls, it's been a cake walk.The music is good. The graphics are a little plain and cartoony, I'm guessing to match the show. Despite the somewhat plain graphics, the bright colors and pulsing light effect still make the game look nice. There's also an animation that goes along with unleashing your Zoid's super powers that looks really cool as fire starts shooting out of your dino and gatling guns are blazing from their mouth, but after a while, it gets annoying having to wait for this animation to play out because it happens almost every match.Final verdict, it's a decently fun game that fans of Zoids will probably love. If you like fighting games, but prefer them to have simple controls, I'd also recommend it. If you're looking for a good challenge and enjoy technical fighters with, complex combos... This is definitely not your game. Personally, I'm very pleased to see the toys of my childhood come to life and pound the living daylights out of each other.
